I just started playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time. It’s been such a long time since I’ve played a straight forward platformer, and I’m really loving this game so far. I’ve spent so much time in the past year playing gritty action games, that I forgot how much I love games like this. In recent years, it seems like gaming culture has turned its back on Nintendo in favor of games with realistic graphics and more “serious” content. Don’t get me wrong, some of the best games ever made came out within the past year, but I just realized how much I miss games with character and clever art design. I’m always excited to see the limits of new hardware in terms of graphical realism, but I also want to see more AAA games with creative visuals and environments. I want colorful worlds and gameplay with more depth than “shoot all the bad guys with your murder gun!”. Long story short - Super Mario Galaxy 2 rules, and it’s making me very happy right now.
